Fernando del Pino Calvo Sotelo

September 28, 2021

Lecture given at the Madrid Association of Family Businesses (AMEF), September 23rd, 2021

As Henry VIII said to each of his six wives, I will not keep you long.

A few years ago, a friend recommended to me a book by a Korean philosopher that begins with a shocking sentence: “Freedom has been an episode”. As if this were not eloquent enough, the author then clarifies: “episode means ‘intermission'”. “Freedom has been an episode”, thus, a cold and sharp past tense. Is it true?

We are living in turbulent and, in many respects, dark times, as we are suffering from a dangerous drift that is strangling our freedom, tightening the noose little by little, suffocating us more and more….

The farce of mask mandates has come to an end after two long years of mandatory use indoors - one of them with the grotesque obligation outdoors - without preventing wave after wave of contagion from occurring and twelve million Spaniards from contracting covid, an official figure that is orders of magnitude lower than the real one.
